While your birth chart (kundali) stays fixed for life, the planets themselves keep moving. Gochar, or transit, refers to the current real-time position of a planet as it moves through the zodiac - and how that position interacts with your birth chart.
Why transits matter
A birth chart shows your underlying tendencies and potential, but transits are often used to time when certain events are more or less likely to unfold. This is why astrologers frequently discuss which planet is currently transiting which house of your chart.
Commonly discussed transits
- Shani (Saturn) transit - often associated with discipline, long-term structure, and periods of significant life restructuring; a Saturn transit typically lasts about 2.5 years per sign.
- Rahu-Ketu transit - these shadow points move through the chart roughly every 18 months and are often linked to sudden change, ambition, or detachment depending on placement.
- Guru (Jupiter) transit - generally associated with growth, opportunity and expansion, moving through a sign roughly once a year.
